Austin Butler reveals he guzzled microwaved ice-cream and gorged on donuts to put on weight for Elvis role… after taking notes from Ryan Gosling
Austin Butler has revealed he copied Ryan Gosling’s extreme weight gain method to bulk up for his role as Elvis in the highly acclaimed biopic.
In a new interview with Variety, the 31-year-old explained: ‘I heard that when he was going to do The Lovely Bones, had microwaved Haagen-Dazs and would drink it. So I started doing that. I would go get two dozen doughnuts and eat them all. I really started to pack on some pounds.’
The actor, who recently appeared on Hot Ones, has received much acclaim for his role in the 2022 biopic and he is currently up for an Academy Award.
The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood actor did state, however, that he did not find the experience to be completely enjoyable.
‘It’s fun for a week or, and then you feel awful about yourself, so I did that for a while,’ he stated.

Butler went on to remark that he was interested on experimenting with weight management for his role.
‘Initially I thought we’d be able to take a break halfway through, I could gain the weight for the later stuff… that idea of kind of being able to do that has always been a challenge that I wanted to go after,’ he said.
The performer noted flexibility that was required for the role of the Suspicious Minds singer.
‘One day we’d be in 1974 and the next day we’d be in 1956. So you got to be able to switch back and forth, vocally and physically,’ he stated.
Elvis previously made its debut at the most recent Cannes Film Festival, which took place last May.
The Baz Luhrmann-directed movie focuses on the life of the eponymous singer and his tumultuous relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks.
